The Manchurian Candidate by Jonathan Demme – 2004 (Drowning Scene)
July 31, 2010 by: Pakcikayo
Drowning is death from suffocation (asphyxia) caused by a liquid entering the lungs and preventing the absorption of oxygen leading to cerebral hypoxia and cardiac arrest. The Manchurian Candidate is a 1959 thriller novel written by Richard Condon, adapted into films in 1962 and 2004. It is about the son of a prominent political family who has been brainwashed into becoming an unwilling assassin for the Communist Party. The novel has been banned in communist states “for political reasons” and was “condemned by the American Legion.” The film stars Denzel Washington as Bennett Marco, a tenacious, virtuous soldier, Liev Schreiber as Raymond Shaw, a US Representative from New York, manipulated into becoming a vice-presidential candidate, Jon Voight as Tom Jordan, a US Senator and challenger for vice president and Meryl Streep as Eleanor Shaw, also a senator and the manipulative, ruthless mother of Raymond Shaw. Years after his patrol’s ordeal in the Gulf War, Major Ben Marco (Washington) has a recurring nightmare which casts disturbing light on his memory of those events, and especially an act of heroism by his comrade, Sergeant Raymond Shaw (Schreiber). Marco takes his fears to military superiors, but no one will listen and he’s left uncomfortably witnessing Shaw’s rise to power.
